Key takeaways for this lesson:

  • A typical problem against good defenders is that your default attacking strategies don't work anymore because the opponent defends them and takes these options away from you.
  • There are a few ways in which you can change your attacking approach and once again make the opponent uncomfortable in defense even if he is highly skilled.
  • Tip number 1 is to delay the initial pass. Don't show your hand too early, instead keep the ball for a bit, fake preparing a pass here and there and wait for new options to be created.
  • Tip number 2 builds on that: you want to create unusual and uncomfortable defending spots for the opponent. The first way to do that is to dribble into space that you would normally not dribble into with a player. This will break the rythm of your attack and give you new passing options. The second way to create these spots is to put extra effort in creating runs from 1-2 passes and tracking these runs for longer to see if a good passing timing comes up.
  • Tip number 3 applies when you are in front of goal and one defender keeps you from scoring. Here it is crucial that you do a decisive move and try to force the issue. Don't turn away, afraid that you are going to lose the ball. Instead face the defender and try to beat him with a skill move.
