Key takeaways for this lesson:

  • The SSMO concept stands for Safety, Space, Movement and Outplay. These are the four principles you can follow in your build-up and attacking game to always know what you priority should be in a specific moment.
  • S - Safety means that you should almost always try to keep the ball safe and adjust your dribbling and passing choices so that the opponent doesn't have a chance to win the ball back. Losing possession too easily will stop you from attacking properly, so this is our priority.
  • S - Space stands for taking valuable space. In most cases this means taking space that's in front of you so that you are able to move your attack forward. This can happen by dribbling or passing into that space. So whenever the ball is safe, you should look to take space.
  • M - Movement stands for creating movement if there is no immediate space to take. Creating movement will create opportunities and eventually open up spaces because the opponent has more defending tasks on his hand. So use One-Two Passes or L1/R1 to navigate your players.
  • O - Outplay is the final peace of the puzzle and is the most vague principle of the 4. Essentially you should be looking to make something happen once you get in the danger area around the opponents box. This can be a decisive skill move, a fake turn, an aggressive pass or trying to outplay by reading the opponents anticipation. The most important thing here is to try!
