Mentioned Defending Mechanics:

Key takeaways for this lesson:

  • This defending concept features 4 different principles that form the memo word SPSP
  • First we have Keeping Shape - S: This means that you should switch players and defend an area of the pitch with the player that is supposed to defend there instead of heavily pulling defenders out of their position
  • Next up is Defending Passes - P: When your defensive shape is intact, you should first be looking to cover the easy passes your opponent will try to play in order to get forward
  • After that you should be looking at Defending Spaces - S: If there are no crucial passes to cover but there is open space to take care off, select a player and pull him into this space in order to close it and increase your defensive stability
  • Finally we have Pressure - P: Once you have taken care of the first 3 principles, you can attack the ball and try to win it back. Your opponent doesn't have any options available to easily dodge your pressure so this is when you want to try and win possession back!
