Creating Passing Angles & Options In Your Attack

Passes are crucial for your attack. They spread the opponent's defense and help you to get forward, but sometimes this means that you have to put some work in creating them. This lesson explains why this is important and how you can create those passing angles.

Key takeaways for this lesson:

  • In order to get forward with your attack, you have to find passing options. Most often you will need to do something to create a passing angle or option to play such a pass. Being successful in this has a huge influence on the outcome of your attack. Here is a rundown of techniques that you can use for this:
  • Left stick dribbling to bait out the opponent in the defense and thus getting rid of a defender which is in front of you, so that the space in front of you is opened up.
  • Skill moves that change your direction (Ball Roll, McGeady Spin, McGeady Spin Cancel, Ball Roll Scoop Turn) are also viable to quickly open yourself up to new passing options.
  • A simple side pass or a long switch of sides can also enable you to play quickly forward right after it. Learn more about it here: Lesson about side passes
  • The Player Lock is also a technique to make one of your teammates available. In contrast to the other techniques, here you actually don't change the direction of the player playing the pass, but instead change the position of the receiver to make him available.
