Deciding Between Aggressive And Passive Defending

Knowing when to defend passively or to go active is key in your defense. Defending actively and going aggressive could be punished in certain situations but remaining too passive is also a problem. With this lesson we give you clear ideas when to use which approach.

Key takeaways for this lesson:

  • First, we need to define what aggressive and passive defending is. In both cases you have to decide what to with the selected player.
  • With the aggressive approach, you decide to go for a challenge in directly at the player. I usually go for this approach when I press up high with my midfield players, especially with the wingers. This mostly allows you to end an attack before any further development, but could be risky if failed. That is why you need to execute the defensive challenge cleanly.
  • On the other side, the passive approach is more safe and secure. You keep a safe distance from the dribbler and place yourself in a spot to cover multiple opportunities. I mostly use this approach if the opponent can get through my first defensive line and now facing either my CB or wingbacks. Since they are the last line of the defense understanding where they are heading next is important. Until the opponent makes their intentions clear and commits to an opportunity I remain on the passive defending. However, right after they overcommit and reduce the number of opportunities, switching from passive approach to the aggressive one could be helpful.
