How To Deal With Falling Behind In FUT Champions

When you play competitive matches - as you do in FUT Champions - it can be a tough task to bounce back from a deficit. So in this lesson, we are going to talk about how to deal with falling behind!

Going down 0:1 My advice for conceding the first goal is very simple: nothing has changed. You wanted to win the game, right? And what do you need in order to win a game? Exactly, at least one goal. So simply continue to focus on scoring that one goal, there is no pressing need to change anything.

The same applies for going down by 1 goal later on in a match. You don’t need to panic. One goal is scored so quickly, be patient. It’s more important to not concede another than to rush into trying to equalize. In order to become a good and consistent player, you need to get comfortable playing from behind. Don’t let the added pressure face you, continue doing your thing and stay calm. You can worry about increasing the pressure later in the match, when 20, 10, 5 minutes are left.

Going down by 2 Going down by two goals is already a little bit tougher, however still very manageable. A two goal lead can be deceiving for your opponent, because it gives a false sense of security. One goal is scored so quickly and as long as you score that goal before the final minute of the game, you are going to get a shot at an equalizer. And things are going to be chaotic. So once again: patience. Take your time to score the first goal and then go all in on the second.

If you feel like you are not the one in control of the game (because in this game you can totally go down by 2 while being in full control), then think about a formation and tactic change. Pause the game, analyze your opponent and think about why things are not going your way right now. Don’t rush changes but also don’t delay them when you feel uncomfortable with the rhythm of the game. You’re going to be surprised how different a matchup can play out once you switch formations and adjust better to your opponent.

You will also need to increase the pressure from your tactic and playstyle earlier as long as you’re down by 2. I would say around 10 minutes earlier than when being down by 1. So adjust when around 30, 20, 10, 5 minutes are left to play.

Going down by 3+ Now every once in a while you are going to have these games where literally EVERYTHING seems to be going your opponents way. I personally do not believe in scripting (I know, big shock, right?). FIFA is a game with a lot of chance involved and like every game that has RNG, sometimes you are going to get very lucky and sometimes your opponent is going to get very lucky. It’s the same as a downswing/upswing in Poker or at some point rolling six sixes in a row when rolling a dice for 10.000 times. It can happen.

Anyways, I am drifting off. What I mean to say: instead of worrying about momentum, script or whatever other shit you’re starting to throw your anger at - just stay cool. Stay calm, collected. I have come back from so many 3+ deficits in my time playing FUT Champions and honestly it’s much easier than you would think. Many opponents start to get comfortable and especially if you go down early, you have all the time left to take control of the game. And as soon as you start getting back into it, you have the mental edge over your opponent.

The number one most important thing when going down by that many goals is to not concede more! Your job is to walk that knife’s edge between scoring yourself while stabilizing at the back. Every single additional goal you receive makes your job 10 times harder. So don’t lock in constant pressure as soon as you go down by 3, in my opinion that is a mistake. It makes you scoring goals more likely, but it also makes defending nearly impossible (for an extended period of time) and with the huge risks you’re taking, you’re basically relying on your opponent to choke the counter attacks.

Instead take control of the game. Change formation and tactic if you need to. And then take one foot in front of the other, slowly pushing the opponent back into a defensive mode. Don’t stumble 5 steps forward at once, you’re only going to lose balance and fall. The calmer you can play in such a situation, the more likely a comeback is going to be. With every goal you score, your confidence is going to increase and your opponent is going to sweat more. And honestly… winning from such a big deficit is one of the sweetest feelings you can get when playing the game.
