Key aspects of positioning and tackling:

  1. Try to sprint into position and hold that position by using jockey (L2/LT) or sprint jockey (L2+R2/LT+RT).
  2. You should try to stay on the direct line between the opponent and the centre of your goal.
  3. From here, don't go in too early. Move backwards and maintain your distance towards the attacker. You want to let him come towards you.
  4. Once you see him moving in and taking a heavier touch, you can start going forward and close down the space. It's crucial you are able to tackle the ball away before he has another touch to dodge you.
  5. One tactic that works really well is to pretend like you are trying to challenge one side to then switch your anticipation last second and move into the opponents escape route. Only try this in safe areas of the pitch though.

Training exercises/drills:

  • Head into skill games and play the first scenario "Take and Clear". Focus on moving backwards at first with Jockey movement to then close in and tackle the ball with good timing.
  • Next play "Run and Block", this time your attention should be on closing down the opponent with sprint and then having a well timed transition towards Jockey movement. Stay in perfect positioning with careful use of Jockey and Sprint Jockey.
  • Then play "Hold the Line", here your main attention is to execute well timed tackles in order to be able to increase your reach and chances of winning the ball back.
  • Finally play 1 or 2 matches against the AI on World Class Difficulty. In this realistic match scenario, you should incorporate good defensive positioning and tackling into all the other stuff going on: Switching players, defending passes etc.
