The radar allows us to gather information which might not be present on our screen. It is vital tool for our build up, but can also be helpful in defense. In this lesson, we explain in which situations the radar should be used.
Key takeaways for this lesson:
- The radar can be used to get an overview of the own but also opponent's players positioning and movement, which isn't displayed on the screen right now.
- You should look at the radar, when you just gave the input for an action and you wait for it to be carried out. For example a pass from player to another. While the ball is travelling, you have the time to check the radar.
But these checks should be with a clear intention. Is a teammate open? How are my players positioned? Is there space or are opponent's player nearby. These are typical questions to find answers for when looking at the radar.
- It might be dependent on your camera settings how often it's required to check the radar. A more zoomed in camera shows less of the pitch, so you need to look more often onto the radar.
- My camera settings: Co-op, zoom 10, height 10.
Typical situations to use the radar for:
- Switch of sides: to see whether you have an open teammate on the other side:
- During switch of sides: to see whether you have the chance to progress on the wing
- Deep in own half/after goal kick: to see whether long balls up forward are possible
- Deep Long Balls: check for the timing so your receiver is still onside when playing the pass
- GK spotting in 1vs1: to check whether the opponent pulls out the goalkeeper early
- Spotting teammate: to check whether you have teammates to pass or cross to
- Defensive Player Switches: doing player switches to player that are off screen, but it can also help to make less errors when using right stick player switches
- Covering areas defensively: identify open space in your own half and make a plan to which player is appropriate to defend it
