Improve Defensive Anticipation & Reading Skills

Defending is all about reading the opponent's next step and then acting accordingly, but how do we get there? This lesson takes a deep dive on to this topic, as we explain how to think about the opponent's options and read his signals to narrow down his next move.

Key take aways for this lesson:

  • When you're defending, you should always think about the options that the opponent has to continue with his attack. This can be either his teammates as passing options or just dribblings.
  • The way and direction how the opponent dribbles is going to narrow down the options which the opponent can pursue. For example the opponent won't play passes to teammates which are in his back, because he doesn't have a good passing angle to play the pass. He would have to change his direction, before he plays such a pass.
  • So identifying the potential passing options as well as the direction the opponent dribbles helps us to anticipate his next action. This could be a pass that he wants to play or a direction change, because the opponent notices that he cannot play a pass.
  • These are the moments at which we can anticipate with a defender specifically for this next action, either intercepting the pass or moving our defender in the way at which the opponent will dribble.
