(Apologies for all the "basically"s in this video. I just noticed afterwards how often I used it. :D)

Key take aways for this lesson:

  • Time is a resource for the defending player. More time helps him to defend better, because he can react to your actions, position himself better, close gaps etc.
  • Taking away time by increasing speed is an essential part of creating chances. Otherwise you just grant your opponent too much time to correct mistakes.
  • You can increase speed in your attack with the following three elements.
  • Passing: the speed of your passing game can greatly vary. How man contacts do you take before playing the next pass? In which direction do you play? What kind of passes do you play?
  • In-depth explanation about shifting direction in your attack: Shift Game Direction Lesson
  • Sprinting: accelerating your attacks with sprinting in the right moments puts a lot of pressure on the opponent to keep up and get defenders in the right positions.
  • Skill Moves: a skill move can be a great start to outmove one defender and follow it up with picking up pace.
  • Our target as a player should be to find the right balance between speed and security. We can't just play high speed all the time, because we will lose the ball quite a lot.
  • We have to recognize the moments when we can increase the speed.
