The Dummy - A Simple Move To Surprise

The Dummy is a very simple move, but used in the right spots, can catch the opponent totally off guard which you can use to create a lot of space, basically out of nowhere. This lesson covers the input as well as explaining the most important factors to identify the right spots to perform the dummy.

Key take aways for this lesson:

  • The dummy is a very simple move to let the ball through instead of controlling it or playing a pass to a teammate.
  • There are two ways to do a dummy move. In general you have to be in a position to receive a pass from a teammate. Now you can either press R1/RB or L1/LB+R1/RB and aim with the left stick in the direction that the pass is going.
  • The difference between these two variations is marginal and doesn't affect the effectiveness of the move itself.
  • There are three main factors to consider when it comes to the move.
  • First, there is the ball velocity. Since you let the ball through, it depends on the ball velocity on how far it goes after and how long it will take your player to regain control.
  • Second, there is the angle on how you play the pass. Since the ball is going in a more or less straight line, the angle determines where the ball is going to end up. When you play a pass which is also going to directly in the direction of the goal, it's easiert to convert this in a goal scoring chance with the dummy.
  • Third, you have the opponent's defender positioning, probably the most important one. It's required that the opponent anticipates and moves the defender out of the way. If he just keeps a position behind you and you let the ball through with the dummy, he will just intercept the ball.
  • The dummy is only useful in quite specific situations and is somewhat reliant on the opponent's behaviour. If he doesn't anticipate for something else, it's less likely to work.
