Key takeaways for this lesson:

  • The German cross is a crossing variation at which you send in a central midfielder or CB for a run inside the box and then cross it from a really deep position with your fullback.
  • There are two ways to trigger the run. Either you initiate a 1-2 pass by playing a L1+X or LB+A pass with the player who should start the run. Or you trigger it by aiming towards the player that should go into the box and press L1/LB.
  • There are three main variations of the German cross.
  • Far post: you trigger the run of the far-side CB or CM to play a cross to the far post.
  • Near post: you trigger the run of the near-side CM to play a cross to the near post. Quite often you want to receive and control such a cross to then finish with a shot or play another pass to a teammate inside the box.
  • Fake: high level opponents will spot those runs of your CBs or CMs and start marking them. This gives you more room to maneuver in the midfield and create a chance in some other way while the opponent is distracted by marking the run for the German cross.
