Breaking The Game Direction Is An Important Attacking Concept

In your attack, you usually have a typical flow of the ball - the game direction. Breaking this can be really helpful to mess with the opponent's anticipation and open up spaces. This lesson unfolds the power of it from the early build up to creating chances.

Key takeaways for this lesson:

  • When you build up your attack, you pass the ball from one player to another. Most often you follow a certain flow, a certain direction. For example you play the ball from the RB to one CB, to the next one to then get it to the LB. The ball is flowing from one side to the other side. This is the game direction.
  • Opponent's will get a feel for this and also anticipate with their players movement or player switches. If you just follow the game direction, you become readable and it's easier for the opponent to put pressure on you.
  • Thus, from time to time, it makes sense to break or change this game direction on purpose. Just playing into the opposite direction keeps the opponents on the tip of their toes.
